Labouring Classes – The Choice is Made for You!

Regulations in Canterbury Papers No 3. told ‘emigrants’ that they were to bring their own clothing and “other necessaries” which would be inspected by an officer at the port before they boarded the ship.

This included:
  • Two blankets
  • Six sheets
  • A coverlet
  • Six towels
  • Three pounds of soap
  • A knife and fork
  • A tin or pewter plate
  • A spoon
  • A drinking mug


Clothing:
For Males

  • Six shirts
  • Six pairs of stockings
  • Two pairs of shoes
  • Two complete suits of clothing
For Females

  • Six shifts
  • Two flannel petticoats
  • Six pairs of stockings
  • Two gowns
