Learn more about
James Fitzgerald.

James Edward Fitzgerald met members of the Canterbury Association when he was secretary to the Society for the Reform of Colonial Government and sailed September 1850 aboard the Charlotte Jane with his wife Fanny. He was to become Canterbury’s first Provincial Superintendent.

Paintings of the Charlotte Jane give us a glimpse into life at sea for the Fitzgeralds. The plan of the first class accommodation on board the Charlotte Jane shows the location of the Fitzgerald’s cabin near the poop.
